Using it for Wordle

Put your green letters in the pattern box, your yellows under “must contain” and your grays under “must not contain”. Tick “common words only” and what is left is a short list of likely answers.

If you would rather have the colors do the work, the Wordle Solver takes your guesses tile by tile and also suggests the best next word.

Questions people ask

How many five-letter words are there?

Our list has 8,636, drawn from a public-domain English word list and sorted by how often each word appears in everyday writing. About 2,300 of them are what we call common; the rest you'd meet in a crossword before a conversation.

What does 'common' mean here?

A word is tagged common when it shows up often enough in everyday English that most people would recognize it. Wordle answers are almost always common words, so that checkbox is a good first filter.

Can I filter by a letter in a specific spot?

Yes. Use the pattern box: write the letters you know in their places and a question mark for each unknown, like S?A?? for a word starting with S and A in the middle.
