Cryptoquip Solver

Type in the puzzle. Ask for a hint and work it letter by letter, or let the solver crack the whole thing.

Type it exactly as printed, spaces and punctuation included.

The printed clue, like “J equals W”. Optional.

How to crack one by hand

Start with the one-letter words: they are A or I. A three-letter word that shows up twice is probably THE. An apostrophe two letters from the end is almost always N’T. Each letter you place removes possibilities everywhere else, which is exactly what the hint mode shows you.

Our solver does the same thing, just exhaustively: it tries the word with the fewest possible matches first, follows every consistent path, and stops when every word is a real word.

Questions people ask

What is a Cryptoquip?

A short joke or saying where every letter has been swapped for another, the same swap all the way through. The newspaper gives you one letter as a clue. Crack the short words and the rest falls into place.

Do you publish today's Cryptoquip answer?

No. The puzzle belongs to its publisher. You type in what's printed, and the tool helps you solve that text. Nothing is fetched from anywhere, and nothing you type is stored.

How does the hint mode work?

For each scrambled word it lists the real words with the same letter pattern that also agree with the letters you've already placed. Tap a word to try it, and watch the rest of the puzzle update. When a word has just one possible match, we say so.

Why are there blanks in the solution?

A name or an unusual word isn't in our dictionary, so those letters can't be pinned down from the rest. Usually one or two letters are missing and the sentence is still readable.
